Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition comes with two screens, no holes, no notches, no compromises

Vivo is just one of several fast-growing China-based smartphone vendors that have managed to attract a lot of attention on the Western Hemisphere with their technological innovations and forward-thinking flagship designs over the past year or so.
After commercially releasing the world’s first in-display fingerprint-scanning handset and turning the bonkers Apex concept into a pop-up camera-sporting reality, the eccentric company is making the aptly titled Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition official in China.
Right off the bat, you need to keep in mind the odds of seeing this launched stateside are pretty slim… to say the least. That’s unfortunate for folks interested in experimenting with yet another bezel-killing method.
Forget screen holes, notches, and yes, even pop-up or slide-out camera mechanisms. Just like the Nubia X (which you also can’t buy in the West), the Vivo NEX Dual Display comes with, well, dual displays. One measures a generous 6.39 inches in diagonal and looks like a largely conventional AMOLED affair with 2340 x 1080 resolution, while the other is mounted on the handset’s back to eliminate the need of a front-facing shooter.
The secondary AMOLED panel is significantly smaller, at 5.49 inches, sporting a slightly downgraded 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution and rather thick bezels. Its “forehead” includes an eye-catching “Lunar Ring” that reportedly uses 16 small LEDs to illuminate and help beautify your self-portraits.

A primary 12MP camera is assisted by a modest-sounding 2MP lens for bokeh effects, while the third sensor leverages that groundbreaking Time of Flight 3D technology showcased back in June to give Apple a run for its money. This should be more advanced and accurate than the iPhone XS TrueDepth system for facial recognition, also supporting new and innovative augmented reality experiences.
Elsewhere, the second-generation Vivo NEX maintains and (hopefully) improves its predecessor’s in-display fingerprint sensor, while pairing a Snapdragon 845 processor with 10GB RAM on the same day that the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition was unveiled.
In addition to selfies, Vivo is highlighting enhanced gaming controls as a use case for the secondary display, as well as a very compelling scenario where the subject of a snapshot can see what the photographer is seeing before capturing a still.
Priced at the rough equivalent of $725 in China, the Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition also comes with 128GB internal storage space, a 3,500 mAh battery, a headphone jack, and pre-installed Android 9.0 Pie software (with a proprietary skin on top).
